SC rejects Malik Riaz’s immunity request
SC rejects Malik Riaz’s immunity request
ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court on Monday rejected the immunity request of business tycoon Malik Riaz while hearing a contempt of court case against him, reported Express News.
Justice Shakirullah Jan, hearing the case, said that the court has not taken a final decision on whether it will follow the new contempt law or the previous one. Riaz’s counsel Doctor Basit argued that the new law bars the court from indicting his client.
The apex court had earlier announced that it would indict Riaz today (Monday).
Riaz also filed an appeal against the show-cause notice and charges against him during the hearing.
Attorney General Irfan Qadir maintained that the court’s hearing gets suspended when an appeal is filed.
The hearing has been adjourned till July 31.

A lone tear drop makes an appearance by the end of the promo. Very emotional.
Needless to say, we’re excited about seeing Veena on the show.
Remember Maya Khan? Yes the one who raided the public park and ran after couples asking them about their marital status. Good, because Maya will also be appearing for Iftar transmissions on ARY Digital alongside TV host Dr Shahid Masood on the show “Sheher-e-Ramadan”.

LSA2012: Are we living in a soap bubble?
Each time a Lux Style Awards (LSA) event is over, there are grunts and grumbles, it’s easy to say that those who didn’t win are the ones who are making a ruckus but then you have your famous ‘there’s no smoke without fire’ to contradict that. One does agree that you cannot please everybody and it is a fact (and human nature) that some people losing will hold it against others who are winning. There will be some who will always be unhappy at the end of the event. Having said that, is that ‘some’ turning into ‘a lot’? And if yes, then there is a problem.
The event’s importance
It is not possible for one who is a part of (primarily) the fashion and style industry as well as the TV and music fraternity to not talk about something as grand as LSAs. It is a ceremony that has stood the test of time – happening for 11 consecutive years now – and undoubtedly has provided a nationwide platform especially with its broadcast on major television channels to the industry – fashion predominantly. At the same time, mammoth resources resting behind the Lux Style Awards’ (LSA) organisation is a positive sign for the still nascent (we have been using this word for over a decade now) fashion industry. It is a testimony to the fact that our industry is progressing and that corporations are interested to invest in such ventures which are circled around them. Asjad Hussain Khan, a spokesperson for Hum TV Network, says, “It’s the biggest television award and fashion award in the industry. In all kinds of media, it gets recognition and is widely accepted.”
To top that, the industry needs an ongoing platform surviving for years that showcases the talent, new work and also encourages others to work hard and win some recognition. LSA has provided that platform for a decade.
At the same time, a credible, long standing event has the potential to contribute and grow with the industry. Khawar Riaz, stylist who has an eye to spot top models and has been associated with the industry for almost two decades, supports the statement, “I think LSA is a great effort to support the industry and turning people like us into celebrities, I have always supported this platform and feel that Fareshteh Aslam has done a great service to all of us.”
The grunts
As soon as the event is over, the biggest complaint from participants is questioning the credibility of awards given out, which in turn questions the credibility of not just the process of judging but the entire event itself. Such deliberations make for an environment that is not inclusive and projects the overall image of the event in a negative light.
Many industry professionals feel that there is an element of bias demonstrated by the jury and certain individuals control the decision making when it comes to award winners and they must be fair – not just on paper but in spirit as well. Rizwan Beyg, a veteran couturier and a pillar of the fashion industry opines, “I think the best way to be judged is to be judged by your peers in each category, photographers who aren’t nominated judging the work of those who are nominated and designers for designers and so on.”
Although, Rizwan points out flaws with the judging process, many also feel that the muck-up starts way before the judging process.
A young industry professional, on the basis of anonymity, confesses that portfolios are judged not by the relevance or work in one calendar year but on personal affiliations. The youngster also feared the backlash from the LSA team of being ostracised and many industry events upon revealing identity.
So what is the solution, according to Rizwan, “In order to make the judging process more inclusive, everybody from the industry should have a vote, in this way everybody gets to participate. You are at the risk of being controversial when you create juries, one will eliminate accusations of awarding people with personal associations and political alliances by involving the whole industry. At the end of the day, if you are doing awards, you do want to come across as fair, correct?” he concludes with asking for a reaffirmation.

DAG Khurshid Khan issued notice for sweeping floor, polishing shoes in India
Deputy Attorney General Khurshid Khan has been given notice by the apex court’s bar association to explain why action should not be taken against him for “defaming” the nation by polishing shoes while performing voluntary service at gurdwaras in India.
The show cause notice was issued to Khan on Saturday by Supreme Court Bar Association at the Peshawar High Court. Khan has said that he performed voluntary service at gurdwaras, including cleaning shoes, during a recent visit to India as “penance for crimes committed by the Taliban”.
SCBA president Yasin Azad was quoted saying that Khan had “defamed” Pakistan by polishing shoes outside places of worship in India. Khan said he was yet to receive the notice and was prepared with a reply. He added that since he was the Deputy Attorney General, the Attorney General should have issued the notice. “Have I been charged for violating an Indian law? There was no code of conduct we were told to follow.”
Khan noted that he was declared a state guest by the chief minister of Punjab and that his mission was to convey a better image of Pakistanis in general and Pashtuns in particular. “What is constituted as defaming the country: Ajmal Kasab’s alleged killing of Indians or a Pakistani polishing the shoes of Hindus, Sikhs and Christians outside their places of worship?” he asked. For some reason, this episode didn’t leave me wanting more. I didn’t quite enjoy this episode as much as I did the previous ones, mostly because I thought that some scenes were prolonged and stretched out to the degree where it could definitely have been shortened. So again, not much to talk about, but it could have been a better episode.
To start with, Iftikhar has just about had it with Shazmeen and Erum, mostly because as much as he tries to cover them up, they remain ungrateful in his opinion. I feel like he’s just going to leave them both by the next episode. Shahzaman has taken himself out of Malik Yawar’s grasp, and is now doing everything of his own accord. This was one of the scenes that I think could have definitely been made shorter. It just felt like it continued on and on. However, that slap was much needed, even though he deserved much more.
Meanwhile, Naina’s whole family has Naina convinced that it was Shazmeen that killed Anum and Faraz, not Shahzaman. And honestly, at this point, I’m just thinking how anyone can be so naive. Honestly woman, why would she want to kill her own daughter? Use your brains for once and stop being so easy to manipulate! Her character just irritates me. She falls into the hands of anyone and believes anything s/he tells her. As sad as that is, there are people that exist like that everywhere.
Moving on, we got another one of those glimpses of Wajahat when Shahzaman threatened Inayah that he wants a boy at any cost. It was actually quite interesting to see how he slowly is starting to show characteristics of Malik Wajahat through the little things. But, is he going to go too far and marry four women like his father did to achieve his goal? According to the front picture, it definitely seems so! And finally, Erum meets her old friend Soha, who seems very interested in Anum’s murder – a bit too interested if you ask me. Something about her seems really fishy, or maybe it’s just me.
Overall, not a great episode and it could’ve been better. Don’t know what happened, but let’s hope this drama doesn’t start to get weak and go into a downfall. I guess you could call it a filler, or a continuation of the previous one but in the same episode. Personally, I thought that much more could have been added. But again, the cast is doing a wonderful job and they have so much chemistry between all the characters that regardless of the slowness, it saved the episode. Will continue watching though!

So, yes, Bilqees Kaur is going swimmingly well, and this was another fabulous installment. But here’s one question… what the heck does Bala stir in the karahi all day long? Initially I used to think he was stirring milk to thicken it for kheer or some such, or bhunno-ing some kind of a halwa… magar yeh sahab tau claims ke he’s frying samosas!! Arrey bhai aisey kaun samosay fry karta hai? Itney saalon main itna bhi nahi seekha?
Keeping his unable-to-stand-up-for-his-daughter father company is Mr. I’m-wallowing-in-self-pity and though-I-protest-about- not-controlling-my-wife-I-still-try-my-best-to-do-so Sultan. Completing the sorry triangle we have the Oh-I am-middle-aged-and-though-I-have-a job-I-still-want-my-mommy-to-provide-free-room-and-board Mr. Inayat. What a sorry bunch you all are. No wonder Bilqees treats you all the way she does, and no wonder Soha, with her sharp brains AND cooking skills, is about the only one who Billo can and does takes seriously!
I know I sound like a broken record, but honestly every episode is better than the one before; excellent job by Adnan & Co. There is so much to here to think about and discuss. I love that Faiza Iftikhar’s story is not linear. The serial did not begin with Bilqees eloping, rather, with every episode we get a little bit more of a sense of Bilqees’ past and what role it has played in shaping her into the person she is today. My heart broke watching her unthinkingly running her hands over the unworn shaadi ka jora, as she relieved the conversation with her devastated father. Her worst fears appear to have come true and history seems about ready to repeat itself. Hopefully, with a little nudge from Soha, she will come to realize that Anjuman doesn’t have to become yet another Bilqees; with a bit of ego-swallowing burdens of the past can be lightened in the present. All she has to do is to give her blessing to Anjuman and Faraz’s union, ensuring a better, brighter future for them and their generations to come.
Nudged on by Soha, Inayat too seems to be slowly realizing the error of his ways, but I like that we are being shown a gradual change, not an unbelievable overnight shift. He might be a bit more aware of his wife’s existence, but is yet to change his free-loader habits. I love how both the brothers seem to expect their parents to support them for the rest of their lives. Really? All I can say is that Inayat and Sultan just be glad that I’m not your mom – you guys would’ve been kicked out a long time ago, khud hi aatey daal ka bhao samajh aa jata tum logon ko….
Useless as the two sons are, it’s the daughter-in-laws who are worthy of respect. Soha, tau chalo we knew was a go-getter, but I have to say I’m really enjoying the gradual change in Peeno’s attitude. Again, thank you Faiza and Adnan for showing incremental changes.
I could go on and on, but lets just keep this one short and sweet, with a big shout-out to the entire team. Beginning with writer, and including the director, actors, technical crew, cameramen, production team, creative team, down to the brilliant OST, all elements have come together just perfectly to bring us a serial that I, for one, will watch again and again.

Sadaf’s sister Deeba is in the hospital and requires a blood donation from Fareed but he’s unreachable. We then learn that he’s been leeching money off of Sadaf to pay a friend who has promised to help him get to Australia. Sadaf is completely devastated by her brother’s betrayal when she finally learns he got expelled from university seven months ago and she’s been paying for his fees and other expenses this whole time. We knew Fareed and Mehak are beyond selfish, but Fareed hit a new low when he stole the money meant for Deeba’s operation and practically murdered his grandfather, who tried to stop him from doing so in the process.
Two major deaths in one episode! In one day, Sadaf loses her sister and her grandfather, and Fareed is pretty much responsible for both. First he wasn’t available when his sister needed blood and then he stole the money needed for her surgery because he couldn’t see past his own myopic desire to escape the difficulties of living in Pakistan and move to Australia. It’s clear that the motivation behind each character’s actions, good or bad, is the harshness of poverty, and this drama serial underlines how extreme circumstances can potentially distort one’s morality, ethics and humanity. However, I feel like most of the characters are too black-and-white, like Sadaf who never wavers in her principles and Mehak and Fareed, who are always inconsiderate and selfish. Their mother is the only character who seems genuinely conflicted, as she tries to balance and consider the best interests of all her children.
